
Getting Your IR Heating Right for Every Vehicle Size
When we’re building custom heating walls for paint booths, there’s one annoying problem that always pops up: the gap. Think about it. A tiny compact sedan and a massive SUV are completely different shapes. If you just throw up a standard grid of infrared lamps, you’re going to have a bad time. You’ll end up scorching the low car while the tall one stays cold in the spots that actually matter.
How we handle the heat
We don’t do “even spacing” here. That doesn’t work in the real world. Instead, we zone the wall. We pack the high-wattage shortwave lamps into the middle section—right where the bulk of the car body sits. Then, we thin things out at the top and bottom. It’s a simple way to make sure the roof doesn’t bake while the lower sills actually get hot enough to cure. Here’s the thing about shortwave IR: it digs deep into the coating, but it loses its punch fast as you move away from the lamp. So, if your booth handles vehicles up to 2.5 meters, we shift the focal point of the wall to match the average curve of the cars you’re actually working on.
The trade-offs (and the headaches)
We usually go with quartz halogen tubes because they hit the right temperature almost instantly. But there’s a catch. When you cram a bunch of lamps into a small space to cover a big vehicle, you create a massive amount of ambient heat. If your ventilation isn’t beefy enough to pull that air out, you’re just going to trip the safety cut-offs and shut everything down. Not a great way to spend a Tuesday. And the wiring? It’s a bit of a puzzle. We group the lamps into separate circuits so you don’t blow a breaker the second you flip the switch.
Making it work for any chassis
If you’re running a mixed-model line, you can’t be rebuilding your wall every time a different car rolls in. That’s why we suggest modular racks. You can literally just slide the lamp trays up or down to move the “heat center.” It lets you switch from a low-slung coupe to a high-roof van in a few minutes. It’s a mechanical fix for a physics problem, and it just works.
