
Stop the Cracks: Getting Brake Pad Curing Right
Curing brake pads is a bit of a balancing act. If you crank the heat too fast, those organic resins basically explode into gas, leaving you with a sponge-like mess of pores. But if you take it too slow? You get uneven curing. Either way, you end up with thermal cracks and a pad that just isn’t strong enough to do its job. To fix this, we stopped relying on slow, drifting hot air and switched to short-wave infrared (IR) heating. It hits the core of the material directly.
Why the Heat Matters
Most standard ovens just heat the air. That air heats the surface, which then has to slowly seep into the middle. It creates a huge temperature gap between the “skin” and the center of the pad. Short-wave IR is different. It digs deeper. We set these systems up for a steady, linear heat ramp. By tweaking the wattage and the duty cycle, the resin hardens evenly throughout. No internal pressure buildup, no microscopic holes, and definitely no surface cracks.It just works.
The Gear You Actually Need
To get that kind of heat density, we usually go with high-wattage quartz lamps. But you can’t just blast them. If you overdo the lamps without a solid PID loop, you’ll scorch the outside of the pad before the center even gets warm. That’s why we put fast-response thermocouples right in the curing rack. They talk back to the controller in real-time so you don’t ruin your parts. We also use zoned heating arrays. This lets you tweak the heat across the conveyor belt, which is a lifesaver because you always lose a bit of warmth at the ends of the oven.
The Trade-offs
Here’s the catch: high-output IR arrays are power-hungry. You’ll need dedicated circuitry. If you don’t, you might get voltage drops that make the lamps flicker, and that’s a quick way to trash an entire batch. Plus, these things gethot. Really hot. Make sure your cooling fans and vents are beefy enough to pull that heat away from your electronics. If you don’t, your controllers will trip and shut everything down right when you’re in the middle of a run.
